Abstract

An overview of 3GPP Standardization

A structured overview of the 3GPP standardization process and its evolution from 5G-Advanced toward 6G, explaining how technical concepts progress from studies and requirements to normative specifications. Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between TSG RAN, RAN1, RAN2 and RAN3, the role of Study Items, Work Items, Technical Reports, Technical Specifications and TDoc-driven consensus building. The objective is to provide researchers and engineers with a practical framework for understanding—and effectively contributing to—the emerging 6G 3GPP standardization ecosystem.

Standardization for Integrated Sensing and Communication

This presentation traces the 3GPP evolution of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) from the Release-18/19 sensing foundations to the broader Release-20 NR and 6G studies, connecting RAN1 physical-layer sensing, RAN2 protocol mechanisms and RAN3 architecture and signalling. The objective is to understand the sensing and ISAC 3GPP standardization evolution and identifyy research directions for 6G, highlighting where academic research can realistically influence future 3GPP normative work.

Bio

Dr. Spyridon Louvros is a wireless and mobile networks technology expert with over three decades of applied experience in 3GPP-driven telecommunications projects. As a 3GPP RAN delegate and standardization manager, he is leading teams across WG RAN, shaping 5G and 6G evolution with hands-on contributions in AI/ML-based optimization, NTN network planning and deployments, mMIMO technology, ISAC, link adaptation, RAN Mobility Management, RAN Resource Management and cross-layer performance enhancement for both mobile services but also FWA urban and rural solutions. He has spearheaded system architecture, RAN Standards, planning, and optimization projects for global operators and vendors, including Reliance Jio, Rakuten, Qualcomm, Ericsson, Huawei and major European telcos, always translating 3GPP specifications into deployable, high-performing solutions for 4G/5G planning, optimizing and deployment.
